Job Summary:

The Area Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a specific area or unit of the plant. This includes monitoring equipment, adjusting process parameters, maintaining safety standards, and coordinating with other teams to ensure smooth operations.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Area Operations & Monitoring:

  • Operate and monitor all equipment in the assigned area according to SOPs.
  • Monitor pressure, temperature, flow, level, and other process parameters.
  • Adjust valves, pumps, and other equipment to maintain optimal operation.
  • Conduct regular field rounds to inspect equipment, pipelines, and instruments.
  • Ensure continuity of production while maintaining quality standards.

2. Safety & Compliance:

  • Follow all plant safety protocols, PPE requirements, and Permit to Work (PTW) procedures.
  • Respond immediately and correctly to alarms, trips, and emergency situations.
  • Identify potential hazards and report unsafe conditions.
  • Participate in safety drills, emergency response exercises, and HSE meetings.

3. Troubleshooting & Maintenance Coordination:

  • Detect operational problems in pumps, compressors, valves, heat exchangers, and other equipment.
  • Take corrective actions as per SOP or escalate to maintenance/engineer when necessary.
  • Support maintenance activities by providing area-specific operational guidance.
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and ensure proper lubrication and minor maintenance.

4. Documentation & Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate logbooks of operations, readings, incidents, and maintenance activities.
  • Prepare shift handover notes for incoming operators.
  • Report process deviations, equipment failures, and safety issues promptly.

5. Communication & Teamwork:

  • Coordinate with control room operators, shift supervisors, and other area operators.
  • Support training of junior operators in standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in area meetings to discuss improvements, safety, and performance.

6. Continuous Improvement:

  • Suggest operational improvements to increase efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
  • Observe trends and recommend changes to improve production and minimize downtime.
  • Keep updated with process knowledge, safety standards, and plant procedures.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, or Process Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • Prior experience in industrial plant operations, preferably in refineries, petrochemical, or chemical plants.
  • Strong knowledge of area-specific equipment, process flow, and safety practices.
  • Ability to read PFDs, P&IDs, and instrument diagrams.
  • Good problem-solving, observation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in shifts and handle high-pressure situations.

Working Conditions:

  • Rotational shift work including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Exposure to industrial environment, heat, noise, and chemicals.
