What is Novac 1230 system ?

  • 0

The Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid is a type of clean agent fire suppression system developed by 3M. It is primarily used in environments where sensitive equipment or materials are present, such as data centers, server rooms, telecommunications facilities, and electrical equipment rooms.

Here’s an overview of the Novec 1230 system:

Key Characteristics:

  1. Clean Agent: Novec 1230 is a non-conductive, colorless, and odorless liquid that, when discharged, suppresses fire without leaving residues. This makes it ideal for protecting electronics, machinery, and other sensitive equipment.
  2. Fast-Acting: It works quickly to suppress fires, typically within 10 seconds, by absorbing heat from the fire and lowering the temperature to a point where combustion can no longer occur.
  3. Environmentally Friendly: Novec 1230 has a very low global warming potential (GWP) compared to other fire suppression agents. It has an atmospheric lifetime of just 5 days and is ozone-friendly, making it compliant with various environmental regulations.
  4. Safety: It is safe for humans to be exposed to in the concentrations used for fire suppression (with proper ventilation and safety procedures), making it a suitable option for occupied spaces.
  5. Efficient Design: Novec 1230 systems are often designed to integrate into existing fire alarm systems and can be discharged automatically or manually. The fluid is stored as a liquid and is released as a gas upon discharge, which quickly evaporates after suppressing the fire.

Applications:

  • Data Centers: To protect sensitive equipment like servers and networking infrastructure.
  • Telecommunications: Safeguarding critical systems and equipment.
  • Electrical Rooms: Protecting high-voltage equipment where traditional sprinklers may cause electrical damage.
  • Museums and Archives: Protecting valuable items from fire damage while avoiding harm to the objects.

Advantages:

  • Minimal Downtime: Since Novec 1230 leaves no residue, there’s no need for cleaning up afterward, which reduces downtime and maintenance costs.
  • Safety for Occupants: It is safe to discharge in occupied spaces when used in appropriate concentrations, unlike traditional systems that may use water or chemicals that can be harmful to people and sensitive equipment.
  • Non-Toxic: Unlike some older chemical agents, Novec 1230 does not produce toxic by-products during combustion.

Comparison to Other Systems:

Novec 1230 is often compared to other clean agents like FM-200 or CO2 systems. While each system has its own advantages, Novec 1230 is distinguished by its environmentally friendly profile and relatively short atmospheric lifetime, making it an attractive choice for modern fire protection needs in sensitive environments.

In summary, the Novec 1230 system is a highly effective, eco-friendly, and safe fire suppression option for protecting valuable or sensitive assets in commercial and industrial settings.
